SLT Weekly Update 240317
24th March 2017
- Humanities have had a very busy Friday, welcoming forty Year 5 students from Melbourn Primary for a Humanities morning. They have spent the time travelling into space and convincing aliens not to eat them, finding out about how life was for the Aztecs and investigating some of the river processes using the River Mel. The students and staff really enjoyed the morning and we look forward to welcoming other local primaries to our second Humanities morning next term.
- Red Nose Day has arrived and has gone with a bang! Once again, students have shown how generous they are by donating to wear non-uniform, as well as eating the yummy cakes made and sold by some of students as part of our fundraising. I am always impressed and proud of how well our students rise to the challenge and put themselves out for others. The array of bought red noses that have popped up around school have also brought a smile to our faces. All the red noses sold out by break!
- Science week has been a great success. The annual week gives staff and students the opportunity to explore and investigate outside of their usual curriculum with Year 7 looking at fizzing, Year 8 focusing on energy and Year 9 attempting to land a lunar module! During lunchtimes, KS4 students were set mind-bending challenges while those in KS3 had the opportunity to watch some demonstrations on combustion, as well as having a go at eyeball dissections. Dr Wilson also ran assemblies on current adolescent neuroscience. The event is part of a larger project called ‘British Science Week 2017’, which also gives the students the opportunity to enter a national science competition. Thank you to all students and staff who made the week such a success.
- Yesterday, four of our most able and talented scientists from Years 7 and 8 went to the Salter's Festival. They undertook two Chemistry challenges in the university labs, competing against lots of others schools.
- On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome back to Melbourn Village College our friends from the Salesianos School in Santander. Our Year 9s had met them last year when they went on the year trip to Spain. They spent a great day experiencing a day in the life of an MVC student and said our students and staff were incredibly welcoming to them. On Friday, we all spent a lovely day together at Duxford Imperial War Museum, finding out about different Air and land based warfare. The day culminated in our students making a presentation on the Battle of Britain in Spanish (and the Spanish students in English) in front of all the other students (over 70 students and staff). Not bad for under two years of study of Spanish.
- On Tuesday, the Year 7 boys went to the annual football tournament. The A team did very well, coming 8th out of 30+ teams competing. On Wednesday, we played Cambourne at netball and football. Netball – Year 8s won, Year 7s lost. Football - yr7&8 A teams both won and the B teams both lost. On Thursday, twelve Melbourn Village College Sports Leaders attended the Level 3 School Games and were active helpers in the multi adapted sports competition, the Year 3/4 gymnastics competition and the Year 5/6 tag rugby competition. They were also selected to referee the final of the small schools competition as they were considered the best there! Well done to everyone who took part. The next round of interform competitions started today for Year10 and continue into next week for the other years in netball, football, basketball and swimming. Good luck to all the houses!
- Thursday evening was our annual Dance Showcase - a lovely evening full of excellent choreography and thoughtful performances. Many thanks to Miss Douglas for organizing it, and to Miss Rich and Mrs Froggatt for helping. Congratulations to the wonderful Year 11 dancers, their younger counterparts, who helped perform their dances and the MVC backstage/technical crew.
- You may have caught a glimpse of Mr Holmes on ‘Look East’ on Wednesday. The BBC filmed the Cambridgeshire Secondary Heads’ meeting as part of their coverage of the proposed school funding changes. A big thank you to all who responded to the consultation.
- As the days are getting longer, let’s start to plan for the summer! Do see the attached flyer, which tells you about the cricket on offer at Foxton CC this summer.
