SLT Weekly Update 10th March 2017

10th March 2017

  • Students in KS3 and Year 10 had the opportunity to work with staff and students from the University of Cambridge during some science enrichment this week. KS3 students looked closely at microbes on their hands, their property and what they found around school. Year 10 students, on the other hand, worked with PhD students, investigating the role of bacteriophages, and how they may help to eliminate the use of antibiotics.  Students were able to isolate the viruses from their own water samples, perform serial dilutions and see the effect of these on the growth of E. coli.  Acting Head of Science, Miss Rich said: “The opportunity given to the students in both groups was fantastic and has excellent curriculum links. Students could see the importance of their learning on current issues faced by the scientific community.” "It was a fascinating experience with degree level science” said Matt Booth Brown and Will Jones commented: "It was a great insight into studying science in Higher Education." A special thanks to Dr Rita Monson and her team at the University of Cambridge, and to the Microbiology Society for the use of their specialist equipment
