SLT Weekly Update

7th October 2016

For this round-up, I have chosen to focus entirely on the superb sporting efforts our students have shown this week, including an in-depth look at the latest Rugby matches for you to enjoy.

• Congratulations to Dylan Miller, who has been accepted onto the CYCA course for this year - Cambridgeshire Young Coaches Academy, run by the South Cambs Partnership.

• The Year 8 A hockey team beat Impington 11-1 with great play from all the girls. The B team unfortunately lost, but in the second half they had all of the play; they just couldn't score.

• On Monday, the U16Xl Hockey team played in their school tournament. Despite being the strongest team there, they were unable to capitalise on the heavy bombardment of both Comberton and Bassingbourn goal areas and score. They easily beat Swavesey 2-0 but unfortunately, Bassingbourn beat CVC and Swavesey, so we had to make do with 2nd position. Player of the tournament was Olivia Greenaway.

• The Year 8 Rugby team put up a great fight this week, but lost to Comberton 25-0 and drew with Impington 10-10.

• Year 11 Rugby: In their tournament at Cambridge RFS, Melbourn were drawn in a group with Swavesey, a team who had previously caused MVC problems. A high paced match lead to tries for Chesham, Hanson and Pendlebury for a 15-0 win. The second group game was against Soham, the team that beat them in the semi-final in Year 8. Clinical running with brilliant exploitation of space made for 5 tries to one; final score 25-5. Try scorers were Pendlebury, Chesham, Tookey and Livingstone (2). Final group match against Impington looked like a formality, having watched them lose their previous two games. MVC took their foot off the gas a little and Impington were looking dangerous. Good defence with counter attacking play eventually won the match 20-0. Try scorers were Jing, Livingstone, Miller and Pendlebury.

So into the semi-finals and it was expected that MVC would face local rivals Bassingbourn, but their shock defeat to Chesterton meant they were eliminated and Chesterton went through. Chesterton were clearly up for a tough game, quickly racing ahead with a well worked try down the left wing leaving MVC a little shocked. A Powerful run through the middle and a dive for the line by Livingstone levelled the score, only for Chesterton to score again on the stroke of half time. This fired MVC up, as the Chesterton player clearly knocked the ball on, before the referee allowed the try to stand: 10-5 at half time. A half time talk and the settling of tension got MVC back up and running with three second half tries by Livingstone, Miller and Whelan. Final score 20-10.

MVC were through to the final and a rematch of the Year 9 final vs Linton, which MVC won. Linton had looked strong all tournament, moving the ball well and at high pace and Melbourn couldn’t cope with this, falling behind by three early tries. Something brilliant was needed to rescue the situation and a dash down the wing by Tookey to score was just what was needed. However, just before the line he was taken out with a high tackle and his injuries meant he took no further part. The referee correctly awarded a penalty try. Moment of brilliance number two from Pendlebury followed soon after, with another try. A long kick from Linton and a race for the ball led to another try for them and the game was finally up for MVC. Try as they might there was simply no time left to mount any more attacks and another late score for Linton sealed their victory for the first time in their five attempts. The Melbourn Village College team can be proud of their efforts finishing 4th, 3rd, 1st, 2nd and 2nd in their five years at the school.

Have a good weekend.
