SLT Update March 9th 2018

    • Last Friday, our year 10 Spanish students enjoyed a day at Duxford Imperial War Museum with our Spanish link school. Kai Hocknell and Jacob Daniels reported: “We participated in a group simulator game called ‘Shadow of the Future’ with the Spanish students, which was all about the Cold War and whether the USA or Russia would start a nuclear war.” Despite the cold, they had a great time.
    • On Tuesday, we celebrated the successes of our Year 11 sportsmen and women at the prestigious Roy Burrell Awards. It was wonderful to see our students take part in this huge event. Well done to all and we hope you’ll continue your enthusiasm for sport.
    • On Wednesday, several students spent the day with students from other schools at CVC on an Institute of Electrical Engineering and Technology Faraday Challenge. It was a great event, with our students completely engaged in developing new projects. See the pictures.
    • The Charity IPSEA offers SEND training days for parents/carers course on SEND law, guidance, policy and practice, with the aim of showing parents how they can use the law to gain support for their child (the process of EHC Plans, etc.). There are several course dates, including 25th May in Cambridge. See www.ipsea.org.uk or our SENCo aghale@melbournvc.org to book a place.
    • Raising Teens Parenting Workshops – 18.30 – 20.30 start on Monday, 23rd April for 10 weeks at Melbourn Primary School. The programme offers a supportive, informal environment, in which to gain information, knowledge, skills around parenting. If you are Interested, please call 01954 286012 to be put on the waiting list. There is no charge for the course.
    • National Young Writers’ Awards – students should see Miss King in En5 or the posters in form rooms, if they would like to know more about this competition for KS3. (top prizes include a trip to Euro Disney and a visit from David Walliams).
    • On Tuesday, four local primary schools attended the second round of the High 5A netball tournament, which was a good 10 degrees warmer than last week! The event was superbly run and umpired by our Year 10 sports leaders. Final positions were: 1st Meldreth, 2nd Harston, 3rd Melbourn Primary and 4th Foxton. The finals are later in the year.
    • On Wednesday, the sports teams travelled to Linton to play football and netball. The results were: Football: year 8 - A team drew 2-2 and won 3-1, B won 3-1 and lost 0-1; Year 7 - A lost 0-2 and 1-4, B lost 0-7 and 0-3. Netball: U16s drew 17-17 and U14s lost 11-24.
    • On Thursday, 4 students attended the partnership SEND adapted sports competition at IVC. They played in pairs against a number of schools at boccia, polybat, table cricket and curling. Everyone had a great time and there was an excited buzz in the hall. Well done to all who took part.
