SLT Update April 28

28th April 2017

  • This week we have been delighted to welcome 12 Chinese visitors, who will be studying with us for 10 weeks, in order to improve their English. We hope you have a great experience and know that everyone will make them feel welcome.

  • New sporting enrichments have started this term. There are still a few spaces for several activities, so please sign up. My year 7s and 8s had a great time at tennis yesterday – do come and join us!

  • On Tuesday, the year7 netball teams entered the local tournament held at Cambourne Village College.

  • The A team came 5th out of 8; the B team 3rd out of 6th. Well done to all who played on a chilly afternoon.

  • 6 primary schools will be competing in the KS2 swimming gala this afternoon. More races have been introduced as the standard of swimming last year was so high. Melbourn won last year - who will win this year? Find out next week!!

  • 100 Year 7 and year 8 students participated in the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Challenge on Thursday. This is a very difficult challenge, which requires thinking outside of the regular taught topics. Good luck to all those who entered. Results should be issued just after half term.

  • Yesterday, we said goodbye to our Spanish friends on the exchange visit. We hope our year 9s had a great time with them.

  • The GCSEs exams start next week with Art on Tuesday, Wednesday and, for some students, on Thursday. Students much remember to bring all their preparation work. Good luck to all.

  • Melbourn Village College student Tamsin Dobb was one of the youngest finalists at the national Poetry By Heart Recitation Competition at the British Library Conference Centre in London.

And although the Year 10 student did not win, she more than held her own against students up to Year 13 at the prestigious event held over the weekend.

Tamsin, along with all the other regional finalists, performed two poems of their own choice, the only criteria being one was pre-1914 and the other post-1914.

She chose ‘Slavery’ by Hannah Moore and ‘Lights Out’ by Edward Thomas to compete against the Essex, Hertfordshire and Norfolk winners in the third heat of the day.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.

Regina Lawrence

Deputy Principal
