SLT Update April 21st 2018

21st April 2018

  • On Monday, we enjoyed the chance to share practice at our annual Trust INSET day, in which staff from across the Trust met both in cross-academy subject teams and in working groups looking at a wide variety of topics. We are hugely grateful to high number of our staff who led workshops.
  • We have just received news from the Society of Biology about the 208 pupils who took part in their challenge during Science Week. I’m really pleased to say that our pupils gained two golds, six silvers and fourteen bronze awards!  Finlay Downham-White and Ben Camilleri were our top pupils.  Well done to everyone as over 43,000 pupils took part!
  • 3 MVC pupils competed at the National Schools Judo Competition in Sheffield 17/18 March. This was an extremely difficult competition but all 3 won medals in their age/weight bands. This is a huge achievement, not only for them as individuals but it actually resulted in Melbourn Village College being ranked 4th out of all the schools across the UK on medal points. Daisy King won Gold Year 6/7 under 44kg, Rebecca Frisby won Silver in Year 6/7 over 63kg and Daniel Frisby won Bronze in Year 8/9 over 66 kg. Huge congratulations to all of you.
  • The 2018 Cricket Season started for juniors yesterday at Foxton Recreation Ground, Hardman Road. The session are from 17:45 to 19:00. This season there will be U9, U11, U13 and U15 teams in the CYCA leagues. See http://allstarscricket.co.uk/foxton for more information.
  • This week, 14 year 7 students went to RAF Honington to take part in the regional final of the Schools Model Rocket Car competition in conjunction with the Bloodhound SSC land speed record car project. In the morning, they built cars from kits and gave them a variety of inspired names and colour schemes. In the afternoon, they were able to see their cars fitted with rocket motors and propelled along a course with the speed measured through a meter long timing gate. Although no MVC cars won top honours, the students agreed that they had had an interesting experience where they had not only learned to put into practice some of their maths and technology knowledge, but also the teamwork skills to successfully collaborate to produce running cars within the allowed time. Well done to all.
  • On Wednesday evening, year 10 Drama students enjoyed a brilliant evening watching John Godber’s ‘Teechers’ performed by the Stevenage Lytton players. The show was fast paced, full of energy and full of comedy and style and the students gained an opportunity to see a GCSE Text modernised and witnessed the actors bringing the characters to life.  The students behaved impeccably and enjoyed this valuable learning experience.
  • On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome Spanish visitors from our partner school - Salesianos in Santander. They spent the day with English students, first supporting year 9 with their Spanish language and then working with year 10 GCSE Spanish students. The day culminated with presentations in Spanish in front of the entire group of Spanish and English students, a challenge to which our students rose admirably. It was fantastic for their Spanish and their confidence and many made new Instagram friends!
    • Yesterday afternoon, the year 7 netball team travelled to Impington VC to play in their area tournament. In their pool, they won 4, drew 1, lost 1, ending up as pool winners on goal difference and going on to play Impington A team in the final. They lost a close game by 3 goals to 5, but as one of the two pool winners, they go on to represent South Cambs Partnership in the Level 3 school games in June this year. Well done to all the girls who took part and played in the hottest day of the year!
    • Very early this morning, 31 year 8 students left on our annual immersion trip to Cantabria in Spain. It’s a fantastic trip, both linguistically and culturally, with not just the chance to be taught Spanish by Spanish teachers in Spain but also to visit the caves, learn to hunt, make fire, sample authentic paella and chocolate con churros and much more!
    • Today, our year 9 students went on a joint visit to Duxford with the Spanish group. It was wonderful to see the students working together to talk about The Battle of Britain – and being able to talk about an important part of our history in Spanish is a fantastic achievement. Well done to all.
    • Our Year 11 group photo is taking place next Tuesday morning – 24th April. All students should wear their jumpers /cardigans.
    • If any of our parents / carers or other family members have any knowledge of Spanish or French and would like to volunteer to do some oral work with our lovely students, please let me know!
    • As a result of concerns raised about mental health provision by parents and professionals, both national and locally, work has been done by local authorities and health services throughout the country, including in Cambridgeshire, to remedy the concerns raised. The help that is available to parents, schools and young people is listed on the ‘keep your head’ website. See this link:

Have a lovely weekend.
