SLT Update 5 Jan 2018

8th January 2018

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to all students, parents and carers.
ï‚· Last term culminated in Charities Morning. Due to the hard work and efforts of all students and your support we raised over £1,000 for charity. Following discussions with students this money will be split between the British Heart Foundation, Teenage Cancer Trust and Guide-dogs for the Blind. Many thanks to all who contributed in any way.
ï‚· We are delighted to report that Jake Moxham had a really good Winter Championships and came away with two junior Bronze Medals, in the 50m and 100m Freestyle. We wish him the very best of luck in his preparation for the forthcoming Edinburgh International swim competition in a couple of months.
ï‚· We began the year with the exciting news that one of our Governors, Katharine Carruthers, has been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours for her services to education over a number of years, particularly in the area of Mandarin Chinese. Katharine is the Director of University College London’s Confucius Institute of Education and has recently been instrumental in supporting the introduction of Mandarin here at MVC.
ï‚· The Government is currently running public consultations on changing the entitlement regarding Free School Meals and the Pupil Premium. Their proposals are likely to increase the number of students receiving this additional funding which helps support them with their education and access to cultural activities. I would encourage all parents to take part in the consultations which can be accessed by the links below:

ï‚· Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire are currently seeking new volunteers for the Royston / Buntingford area. Please see the attached advert for details.
ï‚· If you have a child with special educational needs or a disability then Cambridge Children Centres run a closed Facebook support group for parents called Rising Stars – South Cambridgeshire. The group is intended to provide support and to improve and enhance parental wellbeing. Please see https://www.facebook.com/groups/RisingStarsSouthCambs/ for further details.
ï‚· We have two parents evenings coming up this month, Year 11 on Tuesday 16th and Year 7 on Tuesday 30th. For Year 7 parents who are new to the system the expectation is that students seek to make appointments with the teachers you wish to see (they are given an appointment sheet for this purpose). Please note that since assessment information is regularly updated on Go4Schools there is no necessity to make appointments with every teacher. Indeed, a number of teachers, particularly in smaller departments, will be unable to see all parents within the evening but will do their best to provide you with feedback if this is not possible.
ï‚· Lastly, I would like to thank Year 11 parents / carers for all their help in ensuring that the post-16 applications have been completed. We are now following up the last few within college.

Principal
