SLT Update 19th October

19th October 2018

  • On a foggy October morning, with a distinct chill in the air, a brave group of soldiers set forth to do battle on an English field. As forces gathered ready for their historic clash students faced each other across the foggy PE sports field, ready for a very different sort of endeavour.
  •  The History Department would like to thank all the parents, grandparents and other family members who helped with shield and sword design for today's fantastically successful re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings. "This was our largest re-enactment yet" said Mr Holmes [watching from a safe distance]. “One hundred and forty students enjoyed acting out one of the most important days in English History, the date you all remember from school, 1066. Result: Normandy 1 - England 0.
  • Henry Silver and Joe Turkington (both put forward by our PE dept) have been selected to play football in the Cambridgeshire District U13 team; they had their first game in the National School Boys’ Competition away to Hackney last weekend and the team won 5-0. Next game in November.
  • It has been a busy week for staff and sporting students in the PE dept. On Monday, the U14 hockey team had their district tournament at the university hockey pitches. The weather was poor but the girls played some good hockey to end the season; congratulations to all who played throughout the season - the team has really improved.
  • On Tuesday, our Year 7 girls went to their first football tournament at Swavesey; we had 2 teams who played 6 matches each. The girls played really well and had a mixed bag of results; the next tournament is at the end of the November.
  • On Wednesday, we took a coach full of students to Parkside & Coleridge to play hockey and rugby. The Year 8 hockey team worked relentlessly and demonstrated some great play; unfortunately the opposition’s attack was too strong. Final score 4-1. The Year 7 hockey team played incredibly well and it was an even fought match. However, in the last second of the game, Parkside managed a final goal to win 3-2. Well done to our Year7 boys Rugby Team who scored lots of tries. The A & B team were both unbeaten; a special mention to Isaac Willers for a fine solo try for the A team.
  • Year 8 boys also competed in the annual rugby tournament at Cambridge Rugby Club this week, and finishing a credible 8th out of all the schools in the District.
  • The Yr7 boys have their tournament on Thursday 1st November and we will also be entering a girls’ U13 rugby team in to a new festival on Tuesday 6th November. There will be another rugby enrichment workshop just for Key Stage Three girls on the first Wednesday back after half-term (31st October) - 3-4pm on the school field.
  • Thank you to Year 11 for working so hard on their GCSE English Spoken Language assessments. The English staff have reported that they were a pleasure to listen to!
  • Our English department has organised a Professional Writer to come in to do a workshop with all Year 11 on Friday 2nd November. This will be held during the school day. Parents have been written to and are invited to support us by making a voluntary contribution of £2 to enable us to keep offering events such as these.
  • A reminder that enrichment trampolining and tennis have now finished for the term. KS4 badminton will now be on Mondays – this is particularly useful as extra practice for GCSE PE students who have chosen badminton as one of their sports. However, all are welcome.
  • We are delighted that 3 of our most able Year 11 linguists, Jenny Elliott, Jessica Taylor and Rebecca Taylor, were chosen to attend the Cambridge University Languages Taster Day yesterday. I look forward to hearing all about it.
  • Cambridge University's two-week Festival of Ideas opened this week and this year's theme is ‘Extremes’. The packed programme covers many different topics with a range of talks and events, aimed at adults and children, and many of which are free. There is lots going on during half-term including; see the full programme here: https://www.festivalofideas.cam.ac.uk/festival-ideas-2018-programme

Have a wonderful half term break.
