Rising sports stars recognised
13th March 2018
Melbourn celebrated our best sportsmen and women at the annual Roy Burrell Awards, organised by the Cambridge District School Sport Association.
The awards, set up in memory of Roy Burrell, who was Deputy Headmaster at Chesterton Community College, Cambridge, until his untimely death at the age of 49. He was passionate about engaging young people in sport and the awards celebrate the excellence, participation and sportsmanship that is characteristic of sport in the county.
This year, the awards were held at Netherhall School with more than 200 Year 11 students, who have reached at least county standard or equivalent in their chosen sport, their parents and PE teachers attending.
The following MVC students gained awards: Sophie Willis (equestrian), Will Jones (hockey), Harry Hopwood (cricket), Elena Squire (dance) and Jake Moxham (swimming).
Jake also made it into the shortlist for the overall Sports Personality of the Year for his outstanding achievements in the pool.
MVC has been well represented at this event in the past, with three out of the 12 the previous winners of Sport Personality award going to Dan Goodfellow (diving), Georgina Bullen (goalball) and Luke Chadwick (football). All three gone on to achieve even more highly in sport.
It’s clear that these awards are a sign of even more great things to come, so we look forward to hearing more!
