Primary Programme under way
18th October 2016
Melbourn Village College has announced a fantastic programme of activities alongside its partner primary schools.
The programme, designed to give younger students a range of experiences at their local secondary school, involves pupils from Year 1 to year 6.
It kicked off on Monday when 20 Year 6 students identified as Gifted and Talented in maths spent a morning at Melbourn working with number in different bases.
Melbourn Head of Maths John Holder said: “They learned how to count and perform calculations in many bases It was amazing to see how quickly they were able to master new skills.”
During the rest of this term there are a number of sporting events in netball, tag rugby and football for Key Stage 2 pupils as well as a Year 4 day on November 9.
This is where eight and nine-year-olds spend the day at Melbourn in a variety of lessons while getting to know pupils from other primary schools. This year’s programme is being kept under wraps but last year the youngsters’ rotation included pottery, maths, English and MFL.
New for this year is a Year 5 and 6 sports group open to all which starts after half-term. It is being jointly run between 4.00 and 5.00 at the college by MVC and the South Cambs School Sports Partnership and is free of charge.
There are also plans for a number of departments at Melbourn to offer sessions in primary schools with Mandarin, Robot programming and art among those on offer.
Kelly Coghlan, Melbourn’s Head of PE who also oversees primary liaison, said: “We are really looking forward to this year’s primary programme and seeing all of the pupils, we have some amazing events planned, which will be celebrated at the end of the year at the Celebration Evening.”
