Middlemass Prize
22nd March 2017
Science Week at Melbourn got even more exciting today with students rushing in to see Miss Rich at break to reserve their eyeball for dissection at lunch-time!
And very appropriately for Science Week, an ex-student, Carys Davies came in to collect her Middlemass Award and was able to witness the great enthusiasm for science generated by the Science Week activities on offer.
The Middlemass Science Prize was set up in memory of John Middlemass. John was a local man who was a great friend of the college, he studied Chemistry at university and ended up running a business in the area.
John lived in Meldreth, was married to Jenny and had three daughters who all came to Melbourn Village College. John was charismatic, enjoyed playing sport, playing for various local teams and took part in village reviews. He thought education was very important and served as a Melbourn Village College governor and was the link governor with the Science department for some time. He was very supportive of the Science department and helped the school to refurbish the Science laboratories.
Tragically, John died at an early age and his family set up the Middlemass Science Prize in his memory. The aim of the prize is to encourage Melbourn Village College students to continue in Science when they leave the college to further their education. The prize is awarded to a student who has done exceptionally well in the sciences and is going on to study Chemistry, Physics or Biology at A level and may go on to study further. As well as receiving a trophy, the prizewinner is given a bursary to support their study in sciences during Year 12 and 13, and the bursary continues if they carry on studying science when they go on to University.
Carys is studying Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at Hills Road Sixth Form College and would like to go on to university to study engineering. Today she collected her GCSE certificates and an engraved glass trophy and certificate for achieving the Middlemass Award plus the first payment of her bursary of £100.
