Welcome back
Welcome to the new academic year which brings many changes for our pupils. Not only do they for example, start a new school, move into their option classes, work with new staff but also meet myself, the new Headteacher of Melbourn Village College.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as Christopher Bennet, the Headteacher of both Melbourn Village College and St Peter’s School. I am really excited by the opportunity to work with pupils here at Melbourn Village College who are superbly supported by our dedicated staff. On a personal note, I am entering my 29th year of working in this profession, having served/led senior leadership teams in multiple schools.
Upon taking up this role and meeting staff for the first time, I was immediately struck by their overt enthusiasm for the role that they have in supporting our pupils. This was heartening to experience, and I am sure they will all continue to support all pupils to achieve even higher examination outcomes than the superb results achieved by last year’s pupils.
I look forward to working with you all in the future to ensure all pupils are safe, cared for and aspire to achieve.
New Year 7 – First Day at MVC
On Friday we welcomed our new Year 7 pupils to MVC. They had a fantastic first day, meeting members of their new tutor group and their teachers. Many thanks to our wonderful Year 11 prefect team who led the Year 7s on an orientation tour and helped make them feel happy and confident on the first day.
GCSE Exam Results
The GCSE results for 2022 were wonderful and we were extremely proud of all our pupils’ efforts. Having had two years when ‘real’ exams didn’t take place, these young people made sure they were fully prepared for the return to external exams. The manner in which they organised themselves and their behaviour when sitting the exams won them high praise from our experienced team of exam invigilators – “best year group ever!” was one comment made.
On results day, their efforts showed – the results may be the best ever for the school, and continued the upwards trend MVC was demonstrating pre-pandemic. There are still some appeals to come back from the exam boards which may further enhance the results, but as we write this, we are extremely proud that 81% of our year 11s achieved grade 4 or above in both English and maths and nearly 20% of our young people achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grade 7 or higher!
We wish all of our year 11 leavers the very best as they move onto sixth-form, college or apprenticeships; may you all continue to build on your success.
School Games Mark Award
I am delighted to announce that MVC has achieved the Silver School Games Silver Mark Award for the 2021/22 academic year.
The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise schools’ engagement in the School Games and to celebrate keeping young people active. We are delighted to have been recognised for our success, particularly in identifying and supporting children with additional needs to access and benefit from school sports and competition experiences and supporting them to access intra-school sports days.
We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sports, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. We are committed to using the School Games to try and engage those young people who haven’t previously been active and to try and ensure that all our pupils have a positive experience and want to try out new activities beyond school in our community.

- Starting from 12th September, Melbourn Youth Club will be running every Wednesday afternoon from 3:15pm-5:15pm over at the pavilion.
