Key Notes: 11 June 2021
11th June 2021
GCSE Virtual Art Exhibition
Students taking GCSE Fine Art at Melbourn Village College are exhibiting their final pieces of work to the public online. Covid restrictions have curtailed the annual Year 11 exhibition hosted at The Plough in Shepreth. Instead every final piece has been framed and displayed in the main corridor of the school for staff and other students to enjoy. To give the amazing work a wider audience including proud parents and other relatives, the Art Department has turned the work into a virtual exhibition, which can be viewed here.
Head of Art, Sarah Heeks said: "I am truly amazed by the pupils’ resilience and the creative energy, displayed throughout this difficult time and feel their work celebrates the outstanding achievement of the 2021 Art class. I will miss them all and wish them the very best in the future."
Promoting Careers at MVC
All Year 7 and 8 pupils had an event this week with volunteers from various industries and job sectors. Pupils had to ask questions to try to guess the person’s role! They enjoyed finding out about the architect, material scientist, transport planner and the early years trainer. Year 9 pupils have a careers session this week and Year 10 pupils will be meeting people from the construction, science and language-related sectors who will share their experiences in their careers.
Physical Education
Reminder that in the hot weather, all pupils need to bring a water bottle, hat and sunscreen for their PE lessons.
Carers Week
Individuals, organisations and communities across the country came together this week to celebrate carers and to make caring visible and valued. We celebrate and support young carers in school by offering one to one support with Mrs Daly, The Young Carers Champion or any other member of the Pastoral Team. Pupils can speak to their Form Tutor or Head of Year. You can find out more about support from @Centre33camb here.
Healthy Eating Week – 14th to 18th June 2021
Next week is British Nutrition Foundation Healthy Eating Week where people are invited to join the ‘Find your healthier you’ journey! Pupils will be encouraged to think about why eating healthily is important and how this is linked to mood, better confidence, weight control etc. Waitrose, as official supporter, is running a Zoom cookery school session where people can cook-along on 17th June. You can sign up in advance here.
Year 7 Credits
Congratulations to Charlie for being the first boy to reach 125 credits. Pupils can also be recognised as Star of the Week, and continued good behaviour will enable them to go on the Year 7 end of year trip in July.
Year 10 Exams schedule
The timetable for Year 10 exams has been emailed to parents this week. Exams will be taking place between 21st June to 5th July.
Mandarin Excellence Programme
Sadly, the MEP trip to China has not been possible for 2020 or 2021. However, the MEP team have been working hard with partners in China to provide a two-week enjoyable, memorable and educational virtual visit for MEP students. They will be able to take part in thematic virtual tours of different locations in China and live events and activities as part of a large national activity with other UK schools.
Online Safety Newsletter – June 2021
The second edition of our monthly Online Safety Newsletter is being sent out with this issue of Key Notes and is also available on our website here. This month’s newsletter looks specifically at YouTube and their new supervised experience and Omegle – what you should be aware of. There are sections on Your Digital Footprint; Screen Time; SEND Online Safety Hub, Social Networking and The Dove Self-Esteem Project which includes a video about retouching apps and the pressure to post the perfect selfie.
Pride Month in June
At MVC we are celebrating Pride Month. This fits in well with our school motto of ‘Everybody is
Somebody’ and we believe in equality for all of our students and staff. We have updated our LGBTQ themed school noticeboard and have lots of activities planned including having a visit from The Kite Trust who will be hosting a school Assembly on 25th June, together with discussion during tutor time and PHSCE lessons. We are fortunate to have an excellent Pastoral team who are available to support, advise and offer guidance, including Mrs Daly who is our LGBT Champion.
Have a good weekend,
Simon Holmes
