GCSE Results joy

24th August 2017

Students at Melbourn are celebrating today after posting an impressive set of GCSE results.

Under the government’s new grading system for maths and English, 76% achieved grade 4 or above (equivalent to C under the old system) in both subjects, with more than half gaining grades 5-9.

In maths 82% of students were graded at 4 or better with 28% of all grades being 7-9 (the old A-A* measure) and 7% of students getting the highest possible grade.

Today’s results also saw 83% of Melbourn’s students gaining grade 4 or better in English Language or Literature.

Elsewhere 23% of all French results were A*.

Melbourn’s top performer was Harry Gee who achieved grade 9 in both English Literature and Maths, 8 in English language and A* in all his other subjects.

Principal Simon Holmes said: “I’m delighted to see that the hard work of the students and staff has been realised in these grades. Despite the new grading system in English and Maths these subjects have continued to achieve some very strong results.”

This system has been introduced for English literature, English language and mathematics GCSEs. The new scoring system grades student’s results on a 1-9 scale, with 9 being the best grade. This system aims to allow for more differentiation between student’s results with 4 being a standard pass and 5 a stronger pass. Similarly, an 8 or 9 score is the equivalent to an A*, but the new system provides distinction between students who would achieve a lower A* to those achieving a higher A*.  This provides 4-9 as being comparable to A*-C. Additionally, the new English and maths GCSEs implemented this year are more rigorous with one final exam at the end of Year 11, rather than spread across the two years.

The grading system has only been rolled out with English and maths for the 2017 results. In 2018, another 20 subjects will be graded at levels 1-9 with the aim that by 2019 a majority of subjects will be under this new system
